After King Lear has split his kingdom into two he obviously no longer has the capacity as king to make such decisions again. He sees the world through the eyes of someone with total power, but actually he no longer has any real power and quickly loses all its trappings - his knights, his followers and soon any shelter.
trappings - 复数名词

另外一个和trappings含义相近的短语是:come with the territory 不过trappings通常是指一种地位、职业、情况所附带的好处。但是"come with the territory"通常是指不太好的东西。
come/go with the territory to be a natural and accepted
part of a particular job, situation, place etc:
