Batman (motion picture), movie about a millionaire who fights crime disguised as a bat, based on Bob Kane’s comic books and released in 1989. The film, which is set in gloomy, crime-ridden Gotham City, won an Academy Award for art direction. The city calls off a major celebration because of a crime wave led by the Joker (played by Jack Nicholson), a maniac who derives pleasure from hurting others. Michael Keaton plays Bruce Wayne, the millionaire who falls in love with journalist Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger). Keaton also plays Wayne’s crime-fighting alter ego, Batman, who ousts the Joker, making the city safe once again.
